Facts about the 1948 Ashgabat Earthquake

The 1948 Ashgabat earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 7.3Mw, and occured at the epicenter near Ashgabat (now Turkmenistan).
The disaster caused massive amounts of damage to Ashgabat and surrounding villages. Mostly all brick buildings caved in on themselves, concrete structures were damaged, and trains derailed.
A lot of sources claim that the death toll was around 10,000, however a report released on 9 September 1988 stated that in fact the correct death toll was close to 110,000. Then a later report in 2007 made by the State News Agency of Turkmenistan puts the death toll to an even bigger 176,000.
